Getting a degree for the sake of getting the degree?

Has anyone else considered getting a degree in something completely unnecessary to your job, mostly just so that you can hold that degree and the clout that comes with it? I'm considering going on to get my PhD in History, which actually has nothing to do with my current career, future career, or previous educational experience. I'm just passionate about history, but I feel more like a hobbyist than an expert. The cost is what's stopping me (but it really isn't a lot spread over the 3-4 years it would require to complete my degree... most of my masters credits will likely transfer).

  • I say do it! I did something similar, did a Phd in economic history despite the fact that i don't work in it, etc.
