What ports are a must-have for you on a laptop and what do you use them for?

With many smaller laptops, there are often fewer ports available. Even larger ones are starting to get fewer ports these days. My current machine only has two USB-C ports (one of which is used for power) and one 3.5 mm headphone jack. I got a hub to provide more ports but have found that I use it much less frequently than anticipated.

How about you? What ports are a must-have for you today when looking for a laptop? What do you use those ports for?

  • I have 2 USB C and 1 USB 3.1 Port, plus headphone/microphone jack.  Could get by with just 2 USB C, but like the older jack for my computer mouse.  If the mouse did not need a usb port, I would not really need the Older USB Port.   But still I do have old style USB cables for Printer, phone charging, etc that the original USB is nice to have.   In a couple of years all will switch to USB C, (or maybe even some newer/faster usb design. LOL) so 2 USB C Style, with a hub is OK at a minimum for me.

  • With just a hdmi port and an external monitor which has a kvm switch, I'll plug my keyboard and mouse into the monitor. I'm able to control other devices with this monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Not just my laptop!

  • I need to have at least 1 usb c, 1 hdmi, 2 usb 3.1 ports plus headphone / microphone jack.  I too agree with you I have purchased hubs too and only use them when I am not bringing my laptop from one place to another.

  • I'd rather have an extra USB-C port over having an older USB-A port, since I could always just easily use an adapter if I needed to use an older device.

  • I use a USB-A for a mouse, HDMI to connect a monitor, and (if the laptop doesn't have Bluetooth) another USB-A for connecting a wireless headset.

  • Mouse, and keyboard. Not just my laptop!
