Dr. Clare Fieseler is a science journalist and conservation biologist. Gabby Salazar is a natural history photographer and an environmental social scientist. They’re both National Geographic Explorers and together they wrote No Boundaries: 25 Women Explorers and Scientists Share Adventures, Inspiration, and Advice. They’re also hosting the No Boundaries Book Club, an 8-part adventure to hear stories and advice from National Geographic Explorers around the world.

In this episode, Clare and Gabby talk about bonding over their shared passion for photography, traveling to Zimbabwe to film for National Geographic, and perseverance in the face of adversity.

About Clare:

Dr. Clare Fieseler is both a journalist and scientist. Her bylines have appeared in outlets like Vox, Slate, National Geographic, and The Washington Post. She also maintains a research appointment at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History where she works with Dr. Nick Pyenson on a National Geographic Society-funded research project.

Clare earned a PhD in ecology at UNC Chapel Hill. She’s taught courses on biodiversity and climate change at Georgetown University and served as the Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution studying marine mammal populations in the Arabian Gulf and cross-border policies to conserve them.

About Gabby:

Gabby Salazar is a conservation photographer and an environmental social scientist based in Florida. Since first picking up a camera at 11 years old, she has traveled throughout North America and to over 40 countries to create images of nature and wildlife. In 2021, she was recognized by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) as the Emerging Photographer of the Year and in 2004 I was named BBC Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

She’s a National Geographic Explorer, a Past President of the North American Nature Photography Association, and an Associate Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
