We recently asked our Lenovo recruitment team (Krista Jaeckel, Erin Jernigan, and Jane Shephard) to share some tips for working at a global corporation. Their answers are below.

What are some tips for working at a global corporation?

Krista Jaekel:

Good communication skills both verbal and written. Being able to work in a team environment especially with people who are different from yourself. Being respectful. Have an open mind.

Erin Jernigan:

- Ability to listen and understand another point of view

- Using time wisely during meetings to avoid back-forth between time zones

- Adjust your communication styles accordingly

- Flexibility

Jane Shephard:

Be engaged - look for opportunities to volunteer and take advantage of a global team to meet and collaborate with others from different backgrounds.

  • Maybe the best tip of all is: Don't work for a global corporation. Get hired at a local small business.

  • In some cases that's very good advice but it depends on your career there.  I worked for one and if you spent too much time at overseas locations you often missed out on US Head Office promotions - sort of out-of-sight, out-of-mind in action.   On the other hand if a person spend time in the US and then was stationed overseas for a few years in a senior management position at the overseas affiliate it would be very good for one's career.
