Teaching the students of K. International School Tokyo about Famous UK Landmarks

Blog/Article

Daniel Cox, our UK Community Manager, took part in a special education event with the K. International School Tokyo (KIST). Read about his experience below.

Recently, I had the honour to present to a class of students at KIST, a school that prides itself on providing international education for children from diverse backgrounds. With their G2 classes (7-8 year olds) currently learning about landmarks from different countries around the world, I was asked to host a presentation about famous landmarks from my own country, the UK. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity!

Leading up to the event, I sincerely hoped my presentation would be engaging enough for the class. What if my PowerPoint was to be met with a room full of disinterested or bemused stares? Thankfully, I need not have worried. When it came time to ask ‘Any questions?’, at least a dozen hands shot into the air, loaded with all sorts of charming and curious queries. One young student was keenly interested in finding out if pets were allowed in Tower Bridge. I must confess, I wasn’t able to provide them with an answer.

It was an absolute joy taking the ~50 students through some of the well-known landmarks of my homeland, including Big Ben and Stonehenge, as well as introducing some lesser-known landmarks, such as the Roman Baths and the White Cliffs of Dover. I’ve always been hugely passionate when it comes to learning about different cultures from around the world, so this opportunity was both an immense pleasure and privilege to take part in. I believe that the magnificent differences across our world are something that should be celebrated wherever possible. By exposing future generations to varying cultures from a young age, we can inspire more people to respect, learn from, and ultimately champion cultural diversity.

I’d like to extend a sincere ‘Arigato’ to K. International School Tokyo for this opportunity, and to the bright, attentive students who attended my talk. P.S: According to the official Tower Bridge website, well-behaved dogs are indeed allowed to visit Tower Bridge, making it ‘London’s only major dog-friendly attraction’!
